The Energy
for Sustainable Development Online Course
is delivered
by the International Institute for Industrial
Environmental Economics (IIIEE) at Lund University, Sweden, in
collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the
United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and the Global Network on
Energy for
Sustainable Development (GNESD). External
experts are also engaged to facilitate
online discussions and to provide feedback to written
assignments.
The course is financially supported by the Swedish International
Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA).
IIIEE
& Lund University
The
International Institute for Industrial Environmental Economics (IIIEE)
at Lund University, Sweden, has been engaged since 1994 in
interdisciplinary education and research with a focus on the conceptual
development and practical testing of innovative tools, methodologies
and approaches which support preventative solutions to environmental
problems. The Institute’s core research areas are sustainable product
and service systems, distributed economies, and energy for sustainable
development.
IIIEE educates
through MSc and PhD programmes, undergraduate courses, executive
training and an international youth outreach programme. All efforts
target future decision-makers in management and policy for sustainable
development.
IIIEE also has
experience working with online distance
education for many years. Since 1999 IIIEE has educated more than 10000
young people
between 14 and 18 years old from all over the world in preventative
environmental strategies through its Young Masters Programme (YMP).
Additionally, IIIEE's new enhanced MSc Programme in Environmental
Management
and Policy now starts with a 9-month online distance education block
Lund University
is one of Sweden's most prestigious universities and Scandinavia's
largest institution for education and research, frequently ranked among
the world's top 100 universities. The university was founded in 1666
and is the second oldest within Sweden's present borders. Lund
University has 7 faculties, with a total of approximately 38 000
students enrolled in more than 50 different programmes and 800 separate
courses.
UNDP
This course is a part of UNDP's development efforts in the
thematic priority areas (Practice Areas) of Energy and Environment.
UNDP's Sustainable Energy Programme Team works toward ensuring that the
policy guidance and operational tools of UNDP support the three pillars
of sustainable development – economic development, social concerns, and
environmental protection at the global, regional, and national levels.
Focus on four priority areas in sustainable energy help achieve this:
- strengthening national policy frameworks to support energy
for poverty reduction and sustainable development;
- promoting rural energy services to support growth and equity;
- promoting clean energy technologies for sustainable
development; and
- increasing access to investment financing for sustainable
energy
A fifth service
line cross-cuts global and regional activities to support global
advocacy, analysis and policy as well as engagement in
intergovernmental processes. Strengthened knowledge management capacity
is a prerequisite for effective conduct of policy analysis and
subsequent engagement with national, regional and global partners.
UNEP
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) provides institutional
support, partnership and global network access to the Energy for
Sustainable Development Course. The goal of UNEP’s Energy Branch is to
bring a longer term, environmental dimension into energy sector
decisions. UNEP’s activities help decision-makers to improve their
understanding of the link between the energy choices they face and
broader sustainable development issues. The Branch’s emphasis is on
increasing the human capacity to create opportunities for development
while reducing the harmful effects of energy production and use. UNEP’s
efforts are primarily directed at developing countries, and much of our
work is done jointly with institutes involved in energy, environment
and development challenges.
GNESD
The Global Network on Energy for Sustainable Development
(GNESD) is a UNEP facilitated knowledge network of developing world
centers of excellence and network partners. The main objective of GNESD
is to work for reaching the Millennium Development Goals (MDG). GNESD
partners will be central in provision of relevant experts who can serve
as key technical facilitators for the Energy for Sustainable
Development Online Course, and who can provide a range of additional
technical
inputs, in terms of course content, scope and modes of delivery.
